Lyrics: When I’m Far Away From Home

There’s thunder in your oceans
And there’s peace upon your shores
And I feel fine with Caroline for sure…But

When I’m far away from home
And my troubles are dark and deep
And a restless sleep just turns my thoughts to you
Warm memories rife with love and life
Sweep over my heart anew
In my mind I find I’m headin' home to you

‘Cuz I’m missin' the Maritimes
Soft winds and Caroline
Fishin’ boats bobbin’ away
Acadian melodies
Saltwater memories
Rise like the tides in the bay
Rush in and wash me away now

You’re in my heart you’re on my mind
The Maritimes and Caroline
I hope to make you mine this time
‘Cuz baby I’ve been
Gone too long
Long journey bring me home
And rescue me
When I’m far away from home

When I’m far away from home
And I can’t find anymore peace
And Canadian geese are all I’ve got round here
I dream I’m drivin' home to you
In my light blue Chevy Belair
And you’re standing there
Like a maritime prayer for me

On that night in King Square
In Saint John we were there
When I said I would head to L.A.
I would write you a song
Said I wouldn’t be long
I would make it somehow, anyway
But I get no kick from L.A…now

I’ll soon be there you’re on my mind
The Maritimes and Caroline
I hope to make you mine this time
‘Cuz baby I’ve been
Gone too long
Long journey bring me home
And rescue me
When I’m far away from home

In the car with the radio on
I hear an old familiar song I wrote for you
I sing out loud with all my might
With the hubcaps hummin' along,
I’m on the Trans Canada Highway No.2

Though I’m here in L.A.
Still my heart’s on its way
Like I’ve never been gone after all
I can see all those sites
That we knew on the nights
When we danced on the promenade wall
I still remember it all babe

I’ll soon be there you’re on my mind
The Maritimes and Caroline
I see you in my mind this time
You’re standing there at home

There’s a light on at your window
There’s a dreamer at your door
And he’s standing on the threshold
Casting shadows on the floor
‘Cuz he’s been gone too long
Long journey bring me home
And rescue me.
When I’m far away from…home

Story

My Dad was a huge influence in my life, musically and otherwise. He was involved in choirs, choruses, Glee Clubs, and school drama presentations. His forte was visual art, but before he worked for MacLean Hunter as a commercial artist, he had his sights set on Hollywood and an acting career. Children got in the way of that dream and he finished his sojourn as an art teacher at Northern Secondary School in Toronto. This tune takes liberties with the storyline but it’s all about my Dad. He loved King’s Square in old Saint John and I have memories of traipsing through the park as a kid, while my Dad mused over his childhood memories.
